Israeli forces struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on Thursday after Hezbollah launched explosive drones at IDF soldiers, triggering an exchange that killed at least one Lebanese civilian, according to the Jerusalem Post and Lebanon’s National News Agency.

What We Know

The Israel Defense Forces launched a wave of strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon after the militant group directed explosive drone attacks at Israeli troops, the Jerusalem Post reported. The IDF did not immediately specify the scale of the drone attack it was responding to or the number of targets struck.

At least one civilian was killed: a newlywed woman died in an Israeli air strike on the town of Arab Salim in southern Lebanon, and several people were wounded in the same attack, Middle East Eye reported, citing Lebanon’s National News Agency. The Lebanese government has not yet issued a formal response.

In a separate but concurrent front, the IDF reported killing two Hamas members in strikes on Khan Younis in southern Gaza Thursday, one identified as a former personal guard of slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, according to Middle East Monitor. A drone strike also killed one Palestinian and wounded several others in central Gaza City, per Gaza civil defense.

What We Don’t Know

The number and precise targeting of the IDF strikes in Lebanon has not been fully confirmed. It is not yet clear how many drones Hezbollah launched, whether any IDF personnel sustained casualties from the drone attacks, or whether Hezbollah has issued a formal claim of responsibility. This situation is developing.

Context

The Lebanon exchange is the latest flare-up along Israel’s northern front, where Hezbollah and the IDF have traded strikes since the October 2023 Gaza war began. Thursday’s drone-and-airstrike sequence follows a persistent pattern: Hezbollah fires into northern Israel or at IDF positions, Israel responds with air power against Hezbollah infrastructure in the south. Iran backs Hezbollah as its primary regional partner, and these exchanges are widely read as part of the broader Iran-Israel confrontation playing out through proxy engagements.

The attacks come as a senior UN-linked envoy warned Thursday that a collapse of the Gaza ceasefire would mark “a point of no return” for the region — underscoring the fragility of multiple simultaneous fronts. With Israeli military operations active in Gaza, the West Bank, and now Lebanon in a single news cycle, the risk of broader escalation remains elevated.

What to Watch

  1. Whether Hezbollah formally claims the drone attacks and signals whether further launches are planned — or whether Iran issues framing statements.
  2. IDF battle-damage assessment for the Lebanon strikes: specifically whether command nodes, weapons storage, or launchers were confirmed destroyed.
  3. Whether UNIFIL or the Lebanese Armed Forces formally protest the strike on Arab Salim, which could trigger UN Security Council proceedings.
