The Israeli Defense Forces launched a wave of airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Thursday after Hezbollah deployed explosive drones targeting IDF soldiers, according to the Jerusalem Post and Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) as cited by Middle East Eye.

What We Know

The IDF carried out two waves of airstrikes against Ali al-Taher Hill in the Upper Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon, according to Middle East Eye citing Lebanon’s National News Agency. The strikes followed Hezbollah’s deployment of explosive drones against IDF soldiers, the Jerusalem Post reported, describing the IDF response as a “wave of attacks against Hezbollah.”

Both exchanges — Hezbollah’s drone launches and the IDF’s subsequent strikes — occurred Thursday and represent the most significant military activity on the Lebanon front in the past week.

What We Don’t Know

Casualty figures on either side have not been confirmed in initial reporting. It is not yet known whether the Hezbollah drone attacks caused IDF fatalities or injuries, or whether Lebanese civilians were among those affected by the IDF strikes. This is a developing situation and additional details are expected in the hours ahead.

Context

The Lebanon front has remained an active secondary theater throughout the broader Iran-region conflict. Israel struck southern Lebanon as recently as August 16, killing a Hezbollah commander, and an August 15 airstrike on Ansar killed seven people.

Hezbollah is Iran’s most capable proxy force and its most direct military arm outside Iranian territory. Military exchanges on the Lebanon front track closely with the broader Iran–U.S.–Israel tension cycle. On the same day as Thursday’s strikes, a tanker was reported struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz — a separate but related theater of pressure tied to the same regional confrontation.

The deployment of explosive drones by Hezbollah against IDF soldiers marks a continued use of drone warfare tactics the group has refined in recent months, consistent with broader Iranian proxy doctrine across the region.

What to Watch

  1. Casualty figures from both the Hezbollah drone attacks on IDF soldiers and the Israeli airstrike waves — these will determine the severity of this exchange and whether either side classifies it as a significant escalation.
  2. Whether Hezbollah follows up with additional rocket or drone barrages into northern Israel, which would signal an intentional escalation rather than a one-time strike.
  3. Israeli government and IDF statements characterizing the incident — language around “retaliation,” “defensive response,” or “preemptive action” will signal how far Tel Aviv views the situation from a broader Lebanon-front threshold.
