In a parallel action, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps announced strikes against two US military sites in Jordan, claiming fighter jet infrastructure had been destroyed, the Times of India reported. The Times of Israel confirmed the exchange: US forces had struck Iranian launchers in Hormuz that were preparing to fire; IRGC then targeted Jordan in response, announcing “the martyrdom and injury of several of our fighters and compatriots” from the American strike. No US casualties in the Jordan retaliation were reported as of publication.

The IRGC also announced it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz, according to Middle East Eye. The IRGC statement was addressed “to the noble and proud nation” — language the regime uses for public declarations framed as military victories. US Central Command had not confirmed the loss as of this edition. MQ-9 Reapers are armed surveillance platforms routinely operated in the Gulf; their loss to adversary fire would represent a substantive intelligence and military capability setback.

Russia Signals Major Energy Strike Campaign in Ukraine

The Guardian’s Ukraine war briefing reports that Russian forces are preparing “massive strikes” against Ukrainian power plants, coming days after Russia’s deadliest assault on Ukraine of 2026. A separate Russian strike this week killed 34 people at a Kyiv care home.

The timing is deliberate: late August is Ukraine’s repair season, when utilities work to restore transmission capacity damaged during winter strikes.
