Russian Strikes Kill Elderly Ukrainians Amid Push for Kyiv Deal
Russian missile and drone strikes killed elderly civilians overnight across Ukraine as U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Russia for Ukraine war talks with Vladimir Putin.

Russian forces killed at least nine people and wounded 45 across Ukraine overnight into Tuesday, including elderly residents, in an attack combining Iskander-K cruise missiles and 186 drones, Ukraine’s Air Force said, according to the Kyiv Independent. The barrage struck as President Donald Trump pressed Kyiv to agree to terms to end the war, Reuters reported.
Kyiv was hit for the latest in a string of nights the Kyiv Independent described as “yet another deadly drone attack,” part of a pattern of large-scale strikes that has continued despite an intensifying American diplomatic push to halt the fighting. The casualty figures, drawn from Ukrainian Air Force reporting, include civilians killed in their homes, among them elderly residents who made up a disproportionate share of the dead, the outlet reported.
The scale of drones involved — 186 in a single night — reflects a shift in Russian tactics over recent months. Russian forces have increasingly equipped Shahed-type drones with mesh-networking systems that let them coordinate and adjust flight paths in real time, making them “very difficult to defeat” with conventional air defense, the Kyiv Independent reported separately. The technology has turned nightly drone barrages into a persistent strain on Ukrainian air defense networks, which must track and intercept dozens of mesh-linked targets simultaneously rather than individually guided munitions.
Tuesday’s strikes came one day after a similarly deadly barrage. Russian attacks killed four people in Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Norway for talks, America Strikes reported. That overlap — major Russian strikes landing during Ukrainian diplomatic travel — has become a recurring feature of the war’s latest phase, as Moscow continues battlefield pressure even as negotiations proceed in parallel tracks.
Diplomatic track accelerates
The overnight strikes landed as U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to St. Petersburg to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks aimed at ending the war, according to AP News and Al Jazeera. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Witkoff’s prior talks with Zelenskyy as “positive,” Al Jazeera reported, as the administration pushes to intensify efforts toward a settlement.
Witkoff met with Zelenskyy in Norway on Tuesday, with Jared Kushner joining virtually, before heading to Russia to present a new Ukrainian peace proposal directly to Putin, according to the Jerusalem Post. The sequencing — Kyiv first, Moscow second — mirrors the shuttle-diplomacy pattern Washington has used throughout the fall as it tries to narrow the gap between Ukrainian and Russian positions on territory and security guarantees.
The diplomatic push comes against a backdrop of friction between Washington and Kyiv over the pace and terms of a potential deal. Trump and Zelenskyy’s relationship has grown strained in recent days, with a planned summit proceeding without direct Kyiv participation, America Strikes reported Monday. Trump’s public call for Kyiv to “agree terms,” paired with Tuesday’s civilian casualties, underscores the pressure Ukrainian leadership faces to weigh battlefield losses against the terms on offer from Washington and Moscow.
Strikes continue on both sides
The exchange of strikes has not been one-directional. Ukraine has continued hitting targets inside Russia, including a drone strike on Yandex data centers reported by America Strikes on Monday, part of a broader Ukrainian campaign against Russian infrastructure and tech assets. That campaign has run alongside Russia’s continued missile and drone bombardment of Ukrainian cities, with neither side showing signs of halting operations ahead of, or during, the current round of talks.
No ceasefire has been announced, and officials on both sides have cautioned that a final agreement remains unresolved. Witkoff’s meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg is expected to test whether the new proposal narrows the distance between the two sides enough to produce a pause in fighting — or whether, as in previous rounds of diplomacy this year, strikes continue through the talks themselves.
America Strikes will continue tracking developments from the Witkoff-Putin meeting and overnight strike reports as they are confirmed by primary sources.
