Houthi forces struck two major Saudi Arabian airports on Thursday in coordinated attacks that killed 19 people and wounded at least 364, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The strikes hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport in the country’s southwest.

What We Know

The Saudi-led coalition confirmed that Houthi-attributed strikes caused casualties at both King Khalid International Airport, the primary gateway to the Saudi capital, and Abha International Airport, according to the Middle East Monitor. The combined toll stood at 19 dead and 364 wounded as of Thursday.

In a separate strike on the same day, Houthi forces fired ballistic missiles at the presidential palace in Aden, Yemen, killing two security guards, BBC reported. Yemen’s information minister confirmed the prime minister and other cabinet members escaped unharmed.

Saudi Arabia also said it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Medina, one of Islam’s holiest cities, according to the AP. Together, the three incidents represent one of the broadest single-day Houthi strike packages against Saudi and Yemeni government targets in recent months.

What We Don’t Know

This story is developing. The breakdown of casualties between the two airports has not been confirmed by independent sources. It is not yet clear whether those killed were civilians, airport staff, or military personnel. No official details on flight suspensions or diversions had been confirmed at the time of publication.

Context

King Khalid International Airport is one of the busiest air hubs in the Middle East, serving tens of millions of passengers annually. A confirmed mass-casualty strike in Riyadh carries implications beyond military escalation: it signals Houthi willingness and capability to target civilian aviation infrastructure in the Saudi capital directly.

The attacks came hours after Saudi Arabia intercepted a separate Houthi missile aimed at Medina. See our earlier coverage on the thwarted Medina strike and the broader regional picture in our Houthi campaign tracker.

What to Watch

  1. Whether Saudi Arabia or the United States launches retaliatory strikes against Houthi weapons infrastructure in Yemen in response to the airport casualties.
  2. Whether King Khalid International Airport suspends or restricts civilian flights and whether regional carriers reroute services away from Saudi airspace.
  3. Independent confirmation of casualty figures and the nationalities of those killed and wounded at each site.
