How the System Works
The HCDS is built around mobility and distribution. The 100 mobile launcher vehicles can be dispersed across Taiwan’s coastline and repositioned continuously, making them difficult to locate and target before they fire. Pairing 400 Harpoon missiles across those platforms gives Taiwan’s forces substantial magazine depth — enough to contest a sustained Chinese naval approach from multiple axes simultaneously.
The Harpoon anti-ship missile is a mature, combat-proven weapon that has been in service with the U.S. Navy and allied forces for decades. Its anti-ship profile — flying low over water to reduce radar exposure time — makes it effective against the surface combatants, landing ships, and logistics vessels that any Chinese amphibious operation would require in volume.
The Strategic Picture
Taiwan’s geography creates a fundamental defense challenge. A successful test does not mean immediate operational deployment. The HCDS still requires formal acceptance by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, logistics planning for forward positioning, and crew training for the Taiwanese forces who will operate the launchers. For a system of this complexity, that process typically takes months.
Still, the test removes a key uncertainty from the delivery timeline.
