A US missile struck an uninhabited area near the northwestern Iranian border city of Piranshahr, Iranian state television reported Wednesday, citing an official. The strike — if confirmed by US Central Command — would be the first reported American munition to hit Iranian territory during the current cycle of exchanges, a marked escalation from strikes on Iran-aligned militias in Iraq.
What We Know
Iranian state TV, cited by Middle East Eye and the Jerusalem Post, says the projectile hit an unpopulated location outside Piranshahr, a Kurdish-majority city in West Azerbaijan province close to the Iraqi border. Iranian officials have not reported casualties or damage to infrastructure.
The reported strike follows the US and Saudi Arabia’s joint precision strikes on Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) positions across Iraq, in which the group says at least 20 fighters were killed and 32 wounded. CENTCOM confirmed those Iraq strikes and warned Iran and its “terrorist proxies” to halt attacks on US forces.
Earlier Wednesday, CENTCOM said Iran launched at least four ballistic missiles at a US military base in Jordan in what it described as an attempted “surprise attack”. Jordanian air defenses intercepted the incoming missiles.
