US Strikes Iran for Ninth Night; IRGC Hits Kuwait, Bahrain, Syria
CENTCOM says US forces struck Iranian targets for a ninth consecutive night as air-raid sirens sounded in Kuwait and Bahrain following IRGC retaliation.
US Central Command said American forces struck targets inside Iran for a ninth consecutive night on Sunday, hours after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched retaliatory attacks that triggered air-raid sirens in Kuwait and Bahrain and sent munitions into Syria. CENTCOM said the strikes are aimed at “degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” according to statements reported by the Jerusalem Post and Al Jazeera.
What we know
CENTCOM said American forces have redirected six commercial ships and disabled another since reimposing a naval blockade on Iran, according to a Times of Israel tally of the command’s public statements. The Sunday-night strikes came after a preliminary US–Iran deal aimed at ending the war collapsed over Hormuz, the Guardian reported in its Middle East live blog.
The IRGC claimed responsibility for strikes on US-linked infrastructure in the Gulf, saying its munitions hit “a US military support center at Kuwait’s Camp Arifjan” and alleging destruction of a radar facility at Ali Al Salem Air Base, according to the Jerusalem Post. Times of Israel logged retaliatory IRGC activity against targets in Syria, Kuwait and Bahrain on the same night.
Iran’s Health Ministry said Sunday that more than 50 people have been killed and over 517 injured inside Iran since US strikes began on June 27, Middle East Monitor reported, citing the ministry. That figure is Iranian-supplied and has not been independently verified.
What we don’t know
Damage from the ninth-night strikes has not been independently assessed, and CENTCOM has not disclosed the specific targets hit inside Iran. US and allied officials have not publicly confirmed the IRGC’s Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem damage claims. The scope of the Syria and Bahrain impacts, and any casualty count from Sunday’s exchange, remains developing.
Context
Sunday’s strikes follow the death of a US service member in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of an Iranian one-way attack drone, bringing the US military death toll since the war began to 17. The prior night’s US strikes hit the Darkhovin nuclear site and Qeshm Island, which Tehran called a violation of international law.
