Russian attacks killed eight people and injured 51 across Ukraine over the past day, with a drone strike hitting a residential building in the city of Vinnytsia, according to the Kyiv Independent.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched 153 Shahed-type drones at Ukraine overnight into Oct. 25, including 92 jet-powered variants, along with low-cost Banderol cruise missiles, per the same report. The jet-powered Shaheds fly faster than the propeller-driven version Russia has used for most of the war, making them harder for Ukrainian air defense to intercept.

Crimea strikes and a Western exercise

Ukraine struck Russian-occupied Crimea as part of the overnight exchange, while the United Kingdom and France separately carried out a joint military exercise, according to a Ukraine war briefing from the Guardian. Neither the scale of the Crimea strikes nor the specifics of the UK-France drill have been detailed in available reporting.

The exchange follows a pattern of near-daily long-range strikes by both sides. Ukraine has previously used deep-strike drones against targets inside Russia, including a strike reaching as far as Siberia that triggered new sanctions discussion.

Russia reports casualties in Belgorod

Russian-appointed officials reported casualties on their side of the border as well. Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s Belgorod region killed three people and injured 14, the regional governor said, according to Reuters. Belgorod, a Russian region bordering Ukraine, has been a recurring target of Ukrainian cross-border strikes throughout the war, and Russian officials there regularly report civilian casualties from the fighting. Reuters’ report relies on the governor’s figures; there is no independent confirmation of the toll.

No pause despite ceasefire diplomacy elsewhere

The overnight exchange comes as diplomatic attention has focused on other flashpoints in the war. A ceasefire covering the Oleshky area was credited in part to intervention by first lady Melania Trump, even as both Moscow and Kyiv continued trading blame over strikes elsewhere along the front, per the same Guardian briefing. The Vinnytsia strike and the Belgorod casualties show that localized de-escalation in one sector has not slowed the broader missile and drone campaign.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also been pressing China to use its influence over Moscow to help end the war, a diplomatic track that has shown little sign of altering the pace of strikes on the ground.

What’s not yet known

Ukrainian officials have not specified how many of the 153 drones were intercepted or where beyond Vinnytsia impacts occurred. The Guardian briefing has not detailed what infrastructure or military targets were hit during Ukraine’s Crimea strikes, nor has it specified the purpose or location of the UK-France joint exercise. Casualty figures from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides in this report come from government officials and have not been independently verified by outside observers.
