AMMAN / TEHRAN — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Saturday that it had launched a “devastating and simultaneous missile and drone attack” targeting a U.S. base in Jordan, in what would be the first Iranian claim of a direct strike on American personnel since fighting resumed in mid-July. U.S. Central Command has not confirmed the attack or any damage.

What We Know

The IRGC statement described the operation as targeting “fighter jet shelters” and a landing area at the base, according to Middle East Eye, citing an official Guard Corps announcement carried by Iranian state media. Iran did not identify the specific installation, and the statement did not claim American casualties.

Jordan hosts several U.S. facilities used to support operations across the Levant and the wider Middle East, including Tower 22, the small outpost near the Syrian border where a January 2024 drone strike killed three American service members. The U.S. Defense Department has not issued a public response to the IRGC claim as of Saturday afternoon Eastern time, and no independent visual confirmation of damage has surfaced.

The claim comes hours after U.S. Central Command completed its seventh consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran, including strikes on bridges and coastal installations near Bandar Abbas. Iranian authorities said Saturday that renewed U.S. strikes since June 27 have killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 500. Iran has also renewed attacks on Gulf states hosting U.S. forces, according to Reuters, following an earlier strike that damaged Kuwait’s main water desalination plant.

What We Don’t Know

The base’s identity, the number and type of munitions used, whether any weapons reached the target, and whether any U.S. or Jordanian personnel were harmed all remain unconfirmed. The Jordanian government has not commented publicly. Whether the U.S. considers the incident an act of war triggering the response posture President Trump has repeatedly signaled — expanded strikes on Iranian power and transport infrastructure — is unknown. This story is developing.

Context

The IRGC’s claim is the first assertion of a direct strike against a U.S. installation since the June 17 memorandum of understanding collapsed and fighting resumed. Guard Corps adviser Mohsen Rezaei this week warned of “full-scale offensive operations” if U.S. strikes continued, and Iran’s parliament speaker said Iranian forces now have “complete freedom of action.” A confirmed strike on Tower 22 or any other U.S. base in Jordan would be the most direct Iranian action against American personnel in the current cycle and would raise pressure on Washington to escalate beyond the infrastructure-targeting campaign of the past week.

Jordan is a treaty partner and has quietly permitted U.S. use of its airspace and ground installations for over a decade. Any confirmed damage to a Jordanian-hosted facility carries diplomatic weight for Amman as well as for Washington. The 2024 Tower 22 strike prompted U.S. retaliatory strikes on Iran-aligned militias in Iraq and Syria within a week.

What to Watch

  1. Whether U.S. Central Command or the Defense Department confirms the attack, denies it, or acknowledges an incident without confirming damage.
  2. Jordanian government statements — Amman’s tolerance for U.S. basing has narrowed publicly since 2024.
  3. Whether President Trump orders an expansion of strikes on Iran beyond bridges and coastal targets to the power grid, as he has repeatedly warned this week.
